We envisage that the students initially will be involved in the “street law” program, devised with the help from College of Law. The students will be also be actively involved in the wider pro bono programmes at the LMC, College of Law and in Toynbee Hall.
Overview of the service provided by the LMC Clinic.
The Clinic particularly aims to benefit those members of society who are most vulnerable and unable to have access to and utilise the legal system through lack of monetary assistance.
Initially, the Clinic will be set up to provide a signposting or referral system by which clients may be directed by the pro bono team to a lawyer who may be able to help them.
In due course, the Clinic it is hoped to reach the point at which the Clinic will be staffed by a (part time) co-ordinator who will oversee the day- to-day running of the Clinic, and the project as a whole.
Local Solicitors and Barristers who are willing to undertake Pro Bono work, or who are able to offer initial advice through a legal aid scheme without cost to the person needing help, would be available at fixed times in their offices to offer initial legal advice. Law students from SOAS will volunteer and be available to assist these lawyers, including by preparing an initial draft note of what the problem appears to be and, where appropriate, by undertaking initial legal research. Where helpful the law students would accompany the person requiring legal advice on their visit to the local lawyer.
In due course it is hoped that BVC and LPC students from the College of Law and possibly the Inns of Court School of Law and BPP will participate and will carry out additional clerical work.
In time, it is intended that weekly general advice sessions will also be held at the Clinic. The advisors would be qualified lawyers, assisted by students. Advice given will be in relation to housing matters, debt, crime, benefits, and immigration. However, only those advisors who are registered either by the firm or by their chambers will give the Immigration advice; this would enable us to keep within the rules of OISC. Idea Store: Whitechapel PBLMC are proud to offer the service of initial legal advice at the Idea Store, Whitechapel, London E1. Advice is accessible on most areas of law, excluding Imigration Law.
